Brief Profile of the Department

The Department of Kokborok started from the session 2011 as a foundation course and Certificate course. kokborok as a elective subject started from 2012. In 2023 NEP (New Education Policy) syllabus also included. Now the Department subject offered Major, Minor, Inter-disciplinary and Elective . Kokborok is a Sino-Tibetan Language family and Tibeto-Burman language of Bodo-Garo sub-group. Kokborok is spoken mainly in the North Eastern State of Tripura, India. Kokborok has been recognized as an official language of Tripura since 1979.

  • To preserve, promote and strengthen the Kokborok language, literature, and cultural heritage.
  • To become a leading center of excellence in Kokborok studies and research.
  • To empower students with linguistic and cultural knowledge that contributes to the socio-cultural development of Tripura.
  • To foster pride and identity among students through the study of Indigenous language and traditions.
  • To create globally aware graduates who value their roots and contribute positively to society.
  • To provide high-quality teaching and learning experiences in Kokborok language and literature.
  • To develop students’ skills in reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking in Kokborok.
  • To encourage research, documentation, and publication related to Kokborok culture, history, and literature.
  • To organize seminars, workshops, cultural programs, and field studies to deepen cultural understanding.
  • To collaborate with academic bodies, tribal organizations, and cultural institutions for language development.
  • To promote inclusive education that respects linguistic diversity and Indigenous knowledge systems.
  • To inspire students to contribute to the preservation and modernization of Kokborok.
